A little over a year ago, I started a sports blog called WVUPros. I began with no readers and no followers. I offered a type of sports blog that few others have, by keeping track of professional players from a particular school, and I quickly earned a small following.
By offering a product like that, and through interacting with readers, my following on Facebook and Twitter grew exponentially.
I realized that in order to grow, I had to market myself through the use of social media.
The school that I write about in my other blog is the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers have a player with the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL who is a social media darling in his own right, Pat McAfee. McAfee has a Twitter following of over 51,000. He is a kicker for the team, and therefore doesn't play a glamorous position. How did he get his huge following then?
He keeps his Twitter timeline entertaining, conversational, informative, and opinionated. He comments on politics, entertainment, and sports.
Sometimes, he provides words of wisdom on the craft of social media, and this particular flurry of Tweets below can be applied directly to social media marketing and making business contacts.
"Your network is your networth. Don't be scared to talk to folks, you never know when you might need eachother down the road." "Always remember folks names. Starting a conversation with "Whats up (name)" instantly makes them feel respected and happy which is all anybody wants.
"Once someone is comfy in a convo you can pitch them anything. Boosting them by joking about yourself is an easy way to break down the barrier.
"Willingness to listen to people is a direct result of having an openmind. You don't always have to agree with the people you talk to. Trying to understand why people believe differently than you is a powerful thing.
"All in all, don't be scared to listen to people that are different than you. Everyone has a reason for their beliefs, you just have to listen."
